How to Improve the Wi-Fi signal of Router
If it turns out that you have problems with the Wi-Fi connectivity in your home and coverage is lost or simply the connection speed has decreased or has degraded, you should know that it is a problem that you can solve by simply changing the broadcast channel of your router. 

It may not be as simple as changing the channel on your TV, but with our step-by-step instructions you can change the channel of your Wi-Fi router to avoid interference from your neighbors' connections. 

First of all, you should know that many of today's routers use dual-band connection technology, so they use both the 2.4 GHz frequency band for 802.11n and the 5GHz frequency band for 802.11ac and 802.11n. In fact, there is a channel option for each frequency. 


Essentially, the routers can choose from a few different channels and many choose it in the initial configuration based on how free or congested other local networks are. 

The best wi-fi channel, therefore, is one that is not being used by the other neighboring connections. By manually switching to a less congested channel, or one that is not being used by any other network, your Wi-Fi should improve dramatically. 

We will show you how to identify which channels are most saturated and congested so that you can change the channel on which your router emits the signal. 

How to identify the channel of my wifi signal?
When a neighbor changes to router or operator, it is likely that yours will stick to the default channel or the one you chose when you first configured it, which is why, it can present a high speed one day, and the next day, offer lousy quality. 

Some private label routers, such as those commonly installed by any home fiber operator, can change their channel to avoid interference, but at a very basic level. 

That is why we recommend having a more advanced router that is more parameterizable in order to improve the quality of the signal. 

When several Wi-Fi networks overlap due to the intensity with which they emit, they can cause so much interference between them that they end up offering slow speeds to the connected devices, which means that web pages will take longer to load and streaming videos will stop or choppy. 

If the poor coverage of the wifi is the cause of the problem, you can also solve it by deploying a wifi mesh kit, which today we know as Mesh network with products like the one offered by brands like AVM.

Expand your network with Mesh
With Mesh it is achieved that several devices distributed throughout the rooms of your house manage to generate several Wi-Fi networks, so that they unite them in a single network similar to a mesh (mesh in English).

What if I don't have a Mesh device
If before investing in new equipment such as the one indicated, you want to try changing the broadcast channel of your router in search of a solution, follow the steps below to solve it.

First, you need to find out which channels are being used by nearby networks and which ones are being used by your router. To do this, you can use a free Android application like wifi Analyzer. It is also available for Windows 10. 


The router of recognized brands typically provide this information in its application of mobile devices, or if you enter the mode of administration of the device. 

There is no direct equivalent for iOS, and apps on Apple's App Store aren't allowed to report signal strength, either, so it's best to use Android or Windows apps.

Start by making sure your phone or tablet is connected to your Wi-Fi network (as opposed to 3G or 4G), and then open the app. If your router has different networks for 2.4GHz and 5GHz, connect to each one and check which one is less congested.


You will see a graph that shows the Wi-Fi networks that exist around you, separated by different colors. You can also see the channels that are using each along with the signal strength (a higher curve indicates that their signal is stronger). 

This will give you an idea of ​​whether your network has a strong or weak signal and whether the channel is currently configured to be full or not. This will help you decide which channel you need to use. 

It's worth noting that of the 13 channels, all but 1, 6, and 11 overlaps. So, choose a channel as far away as possible from the networks with the greatest intensity from your neighbors.

In the routers that also support 5 GHz, it is worth connecting your phone or tablet to that network to see if there is less saturation. 

Some routers have two separate network names that make it easier to identify which is which, but other more basic models issue under a single name and your device is the one that decides which network to connect to. 

If possible, look for a setting in your router's wifi options to see if you can force it to display the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks separately so you can manually connect to the 5 GHz one. 

Both your router and your phone or tablet must be compatible with 5 GHz wifi for this to work. However, it is often called dual-band wifi in the spec list, rather than 5 GHz.

If you want to stop your phone or other devices (such as your laptop) that automatically connect to the 2.4 GHz wifi connection of your router, and use only the 5 GHz one, you will have to access the Wi-Fi configuration and click on 'Forget this network'.

After that, locate the name of your 5 GHz network and connect to it.

How to change the broadcast channel of my wifi

You need to access the web interface of your router. This can be done by opening a web browser and typing in the IP address of the router. This number can be found printed on the router itself or in its manual. 

If you choose to use a Windows PC, you can try opening the command prompt in Windows (PowerShell in later versions ) where you can type 'ipconfig' without the quotes. 

Now look in the resulting text for your router's default gateway address which is usually similar to 192.168.1.1.

By typing this default gateway address into your browser's search bar, you should be able to access your router's login and password in order to manage it. 

Next, you will be asked to enter username and password, data that if you have not modified, you will be able to find a screen printed on the device itself. Ideally, change the default password to prevent other people from accessing your device settings.

Now look within the wifi settings for the channel number on which the connection is being transmitted. Please note that if your router is dual-band and works with the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequency bands, you will have to choose the channel separately. 


The exact location of the option will vary depending on the device manufacturer. We have used one of AVM and we can easily find the channel configuration by clicking on 'Advanced options' on the main page. 

Then we select 'Wireless Configuration' from the menu options and switch from automatic mode to manual wireless network configuration. Choose the least congested values ​​and be sure to save your changes. 

Hopefully this will fix your problem. However, in tall buildings in a large neighborhood with many houses, there may be many nearby networks, which could complicate the possibility of finding a better channel for your Wi-Fi network. 

As the last step, you can call your Internet provider to request that they offer technical assistance remotely. They also usually have access to the parameters of your router to modify these values ​​for you and do it remotely.
