Windows 10: May 2020 update

The Windows 10 update of May 2020 was made available for download a day ahead of schedule and has several new features, focusing on productivity, security, and speed.

The first reports on the ZDNet website indicate that the update may take 7 to 17 minutes to install.

Check out what's new in this Windows 10 update:

It is easier to reinstall the operating system:

The new update brings a function that will make it easier to reset Windows 10. Using the cloud download feature, it is now possible to easily reinstall the operating system from a version available online, in case there is an error in the local disk.

Have control over updates:

Another added feature is the download bandwidth limit for Windows updates. This function allows users to have more control over the speed of downloading updates, making them faster or slower.

Network and Internet:

With a new update, the "Settings" menu tab in Windows 10 is able to display which devices your PC is connected to, in addition to showing how much the internet has been consumed in a 30-day interval.

Improvements in the search engine of the Start menu:

The new search engine of the Start menu has a spell checker that is able to understand commands with some typos. In addition, it will have four quick search options: "Weather forecast", "Top News", "Today in History" and "New films".

Task Manager:

Used for system and application management, the Task Manager is now able to display the temperature of the video card and the type of disc in the "Performance" tab.

If you have an SSD or some other extra disk, this tab will be useful for you to monitor them.

Cortana:

Cortana 's app is independent of Windows 10, and that means it is no longer integrated into the Start menu.

Focusing on improving user interactions with the voice assistant, the app is able to check the schedule, add tasks, create a shopping list, and create and send emails.

Bluetooth improvements:

With the new update, it is possible to pair a Bluetooth device by choosing an action for it directly in the notification displayed on the screen.

Before, despite the devices connecting automatically, users had to access Windows 10 "Settings" to make the connection.

Linux subsystem:

The new subsystem is WSL 2 which, in addition to being faster, is more stable, precisely because it uses virtualization technology and a Linux kernel to enable the new features.

The old kernel (a component of the operating system that bridges applications and processing) was Microsoft's own.

Virtual desktops:

They can now be renamed and users can even use emojis.

Notepad:

The app is equipped with features that allow users to quickly zoom the text. In addition, it will also have an "asterisk" icon next to the file title to inform users that the changes made have not been saved.

Xbox Game Bar:

Although Microsoft has not yet announced the release date for the Xbox Series X, the Windows 10 Game Bar, which serves to record gameplays, is gaining new updates: it is now possible to use third-party widgets.

New features for accessibility:

The "Narrator" has new sounds and new commands, in addition to being able to read emails that were received in Outlook or in the Windows 10 Email app.

The text cursor can be changed in size and size. color to be more visible. When using the "Magnifier" (Windows‌ + Plus sign "+"), the feature will keep the cursor within the enlarged area, to facilitate navigation.

Windows 10: previous updates

November 2019

The November 2019 update had a strong focus on bug fixes and showed little improvement over previous updates.

It is focused on new shortcuts in the action center notifications and has changed the search system in Windows Explorer, which has been incorporated into the search system in the Start menu.

Notification management has also been improved. The changes allow users to silence their applications directly in the notification, access the settings through a new button inserted, in addition to disabling a warning sound, keeping the notification open on the screen.

The possibility of creating calendar events in the taskbar has also been added. When you open the date directly from the Windows main bar, it will display all events for that day or future days.

The update also allows other voice assistants to be installed and used directly on the lock screen.

This new feature allows users to use other voice assistants such as Alexa, for example, without having to unlock their devices.

KB4534306 (January 14, 2020)

On January 14, Microsoft released a security update, which fixed some bugs in the November 2019 update.

One focus of this update was on improving security when storing and managing files and another on improving peripheral awareness security, such as mouse and keyboard.

The update, however, came with some bugs regarding renaming files that were shared on a server with a network of multiple computer nodes.

For this problem, Microsoft presented two solution possibilities on the page with the updated specifications. Fixing this problem is one of the updates that are expected in future updates.
